To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, Mr Anderson - aka Neo - has to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Neo already knows what he has to do, but what he doesn't yet know is that the Matrix is stronger, more secure and far more dangerous than ever before. A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Jeremy Aspinall

Although the original Matrix trilogy concluded in 2003, it was inevitable there would be a return to the mind-bending man v machine sci-fi saga eventually. After all, Hollywood loves a reboot. Trilogy co-director Lana Wachowski flies solo here as we find Keanu Reeves's mentally shellshocked Thomas Anderson (aka cyber messiah Neo) in a world where he's acclaimed for designing a triptych of hugely successful games called The Matrix for a West Coast corporation. So far, so meta. However, Anderson is also beset by bizarre visions that threaten his sanity until an encounter with fighter Bugs (Jessica Henwick) entices him down a familiar rabbit hole. But if Neo has returned, what of his paramour Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), mentor Morpheus and arch-enemy Agent Smith? The answers are teased out in a typically twisty adventure, complete with knowing in-jokes and call-backs to iconic moments from the 1999 original. Reeves and Moss remain a charismatic couple and there are some electrifying set pieces, but like Reloaded and Revolutions, this fourth instalment is no game-changer, merely a game effort.
