High concept doesn't always equal high quality but, in this instance, "dinosaurs in the suburbs" works like a dream. In 1982, Oak Street residents the Platt family - mum Denise (Anne Hathaway), dad Greg (Ewan McGregor) and kids Audrey (Maisie Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery) - are ostensibly the perfect unit... until you scratch the surface. One night, their friendly neighbourhood avenue is inexplicably transported to the centre of a prehistoric forest, complete with geysers, tropical foliage - and dinosaurs. Sensitively directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows), this is a moving, funny and thrilling family friendly romp, which still has a murky heart of darkness. It's a loving homage to Steven Spielberg and, while there are echoes of Jurassic Park, ET and Jaws, they work in the film's favour as it brings a fresh take to the "Spielburbia" subgenre. There is carnage, but there isn't much gore, and the tension is palpable throughout. Produced by JJ Abrams (who made his own Spielberg hat-tipper in the form of 2011's Super 8), it's colourful, pacey and slick. Meanwhile, the ambiguous ending could be variously interpreted as sweet, happy and satisfying, or incredibly dark and disturbing. Either way, this is roarsome stuff.
