Terrorists threaten to blow up a busy Hong Kong harbour tunnel in this by-the-book Asian action thriller. Andy Lau stars as the bomb disposal expert brought into the crisis to liaise with gang leader Jiang Wu, who is looking to settle an old score from Lau's time as an undercover agent. The drawn-out siege that unfolds offers little in the way of escalating tension, even after innocent hostages start to be sacrificed. There is an acknowledgement of the strain that police officers endure in such situations, with one of Lau's superiors cracking up under the pressure. However, it's not long before the usual genre clichés present themselves, with the obligatory ticking timers and red wire/yellow wire dilemmas. Despite a promising set-up, Herman Yau's film winds up more overblown than explosive, with the fate of Jiang's bargaining-chip brother almost Naked Gun-like in its absurdity.
