Review

A star rating of 1 out of 5.

Sean McGeady

For the first 30 minutes, it's unclear precisely what flavour of junk this crime caper will turn out to be. Yes, the opening act is choppy and has a soulless, corporate look, but there's something else going on too. All becomes clear the moment the film switches locales: it's a feature-length advert for Abu Dhabi! A team of civic-minded crooks plans to liberate millions of dollars in dirty gold from a fortified prison in the fictional country of "Jazeristan", thus preventing it from being used to fund acts of terrorism. If all that sounds rather heavy, relax. Director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger) has nothing on his mind besides glorifying the UAE capital, inviting Pierce Brosnan to chew the scenery (all empty calories I'm afraid, Pierce) and letting Nick Cannon ride on lowbrow humour and outdated caricatures. Crass, derivative jingoism.
