Summary

In the near future, detective William Bradwell hunts down criminals who trade robot companions on the black market. He has been assigned a mechanised doppelganger created by the Wifelike corporation, which has been hard-coded with many of his late spouse Meredith's memories and quirks. However, a shadowy organisation hacks the android's AI programming for nefarious purposes. Sci-fi thriller, starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Elena Kampouris and Doron Bell.

Terry Staunton

This future-set thriller revolves around artificial intelligence and realistic factory-made brides. Jonathan Rhys Meyers stars as a "companion recovery" agent for the hi-tech company of the film's title, whose job involves tracking down runaway spouses that have gone off-message. When a violent resistance group threatens the smooth running of the project, he uses his own manufactured wife (Elena Kampouris) as bait to bring down the ringleaders, but events stored in his other half's own memories point towards an alternative, more sinister agenda. Writer/director James Bird may have set out to pose big moral questions about AI and what one character calls "the concept of self" (with a side order of gender politics), but he quickly gets bogged down in undercooked sci-fi hokum and reams of head-scratching exposition. Meyers is intermittently convincing as the hero, but Kampouris routinely overdoes the disjointed, robotic movements required of her character. The end result plays out like a first-draft Black Mirror script hampered by plot inconsistencies.
