Review

Frances Taylor

She’s conquered Earth, sorted out Shakespeare, and now Philomena Funk tackles the pinnacle of philosophical questions: what is the meaning of life?

Wrong-footed academics and professors give bewildered, slightly curt, one-word answers to such inimitable, nonsensical questions like if God knows everything, is that a data privacy nightmare? Is it a waste of energy leaving the stars on at night? And why can’t we hear Edvard Munch’s The Scream. Is he on mute?

Brian Cox and Jim Al-Khalili are among the good sports; the latter of whom is asked “Have you heard of DNA?” and “Why do people say the universe came out of a big bag?”, before Cunk wants to discuss a more scientific topic with him: ghosts. He’s visibly crestfallen.

It’s all very silly and very funny. And you’ll never think of “our souls” in quite the same way again.
