Never shown in British cinemas, this is Sidney Poitier's most obscure film: a dramatisation of black Africa's desire for self-determination that was funded by the American Presbyterian church without screen credit. Poitier plays the ambitious, well-educated African workers' representative facing a choice between pursuing racial equality through terrorism, as advocated by his younger brother, or via the peaceful means urged by Juano Hernandez's pastor and John McIntire's American missionary. After Southern Rhodesia banned the film's makers, location shooting was done in eastern Nigeria. Original director Gilbert Gunn became ill, so Michael Audley shot the studio work at Elstree. Eartha Kitt, miscast as Poitier's wife, sings one wildly inappropriate song.
