With his 2001 horror classic Pulse, writer/director Kiyoshi Kurosawa predicted the ways the internet would isolate and harm its most vulnerable users in the early 21st century. Little more than two decades on, he crafts an updated state-of-the-web address that proves wildly different but no less chilling. Online reseller Yoshii (Masaki Suda) flogs everything from medical equipment to designer bags that may or may not be counterfeit, always buying low and selling high. To reveal any more would be to say too much - what begins as a quietly tense thriller, crackling with dark energy, soon takes a series of unpredictable and deeply depraved pivots. Here, the web has mutated into something angry and aggressive: a space marked by commerce, extremism and frightening calls to arms. Kurosawa keeps everything subtly off-kilter throughout, resulting in a morally complex and formally fascinating film that invites scrutiny and rewards patience as it ushers its viewers into Hell.
