A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Josh Winning

This delicate divorce drama breaks new ground by centring on the dissolution of a gay couple's marriage, and the ensuing custody battle for their child. Gabriel (Billy Porter) and Nicky (Luke Evans) have been together for over a decade and share an eight-year-old son, Owen (Christopher Woodley), whom they had through a surrogate. When Gabriel admits he's not happy and files for divorce, the family is thrown into turmoil as the two men contend with heartbreak and jealousy - and Owen is caught in the middle. The film can feel somewhat soapy in its unhurried exploration of the couple's legal proceedings, while plot strands involving a pregnant friend and a plant-growing school assignment add little. But Our Son remains fresh and engaging thanks to its subject matter and dedicated performances. Porter is fantastic, but the film really belongs to Evans, who is hugely affecting as the busy working man struggling to figure out how to be a father.
