This Canadian-made thriller boasts a sort of retro 1960s cast and an ingenious script by Curtis Hanson, who later won an Oscar for his adaptation of LA Confidential. Dressed as Santa Claus, Christopher Plummer robs a bank, but part of his haul is stolen by devious clerk Elliott Gould. From there, a deranged game of cat and mouse develops between the pair. Both the male leads are in fine fettle but Susannah York has too little to do as Gould's co-worker. It sounds like a comedy, a jolly jape, but the tone is actually quite dark.
