Matt Glasby

Directed by the experienced Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger) and starring a slumming-it Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), this derivative action thriller is frequently ridiculous but never boring. When a supposedly dead agent (Clifton Collins Jr) starts murdering journalists in Greece, the CIA sends in his former partner Steve Vail (Eckhart) with by-the-book newbie Kate Bannon (Nina Dobrev). Since leaving the service, Vail does actually work as a bricklayer, it's not a cool codename. "I never do a job without my tools," he growls. He's not wrong: later, we see him killing a bad guy with a trowel to the throat. Despite risible dialogue and some slapdash production elements, there's fun to be had for those in the right mood. Thessaloniki makes for a picturesque backdrop and the fight scenes deliver the goods, especially a rain-lashed rooftop brawl. All the same, perhaps old hands like Harlin and Eckhart should be aiming slightly higher.
