Summary
Documentary. In June 2018, 12 schoolboys and their football coach become trapped in a flooded Thai cave. With rainy season imminent and the military's initial efforts stymied by the waterlogged tunnel system, the situation looks grave. But then a small group of amateur explorers emerge as unlikely potential heroes.

Unfolding with the urgency of breaking news, this documentary from the Academy Award-winning directors of Free Solo recounts an audacious act of group heroism. When a football team of Thai schoolboys and their coach get trapped in the colossal Tham Luang Nang Non cave system after freak monsoon rains fall, even attempting to locate them looks like suicide. And yet that's the mission facing British cave divers John Volanthen and Rick Stanton, plus assorted pals, Thai Navy SEALs, US military and others. Placing us right at the scene through a mixture of on-the-ground-footage, talking heads and subtle reconstructions, The Rescue tells a complex story in a tense, accessible manner. It's also surprisingly funny, taking time to explore the psychology and eccentricities of its characters, which brings a crucial human element to an almost-superhuman feat. After 107 heart-in-mouth minutes you'll be left with little doubt as to the different forms true courage can take. John and Richard may describe themselves as scruffy-looking middle-aged men, but as one puts it, "It had to be us."
