Like a Brat Pack version of West Side Story crossed with Rebel without a Cause, 1983's The Outsiders saw Francis Ford Coppola offer his own poetic spin on adolescent angst with this adaptation of SE Hinton's novel. C Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio play sensitive teens from the wrong side of the tracks in 1960s Tulsa, who are part of a gang of "greasers". When they fall foul of their rich rivals, the pair flee town with the help of Matt Dillon's older associate. There are a few cheesy moments, but Coppola turns a grubby predicament into a grand and impactful tragedy. It's a film that wears its humanity and sense of injustice proudly and wraps it all up in gloriously rendered sunsets and sinister shadows. With Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Tom Cruise among the supporting players, the title now seems ironic given how famous the cast would become.
