Summary
Director and actor Jonah Hill examines the darker side of celebrity in a gnarly comedy, which he co-wrote with Ezra Woods. Beloved Hollywood star Reef Hawk (Keanu Reeves) learns about a video that would shatter his carefully crafted public image and a $15 million extortion demand to prevent the footage from leaking. Desperate to unmask the blackmailer and protect everything he has built, Reef turns in despair to his lifelong best friends Kyle (Cameron Diaz) and Xander (Matt Bomer). They agree to help Reef on his soul-searching journey to make amends with anyone he has wronged in the hope this might end the nightmare. Reef's crisis lawyer Ira (Jonah Hill) prepares for the worst

Keanu Reeves stars as a troubled Hollywood star in this cutting black comedy from actor-turned-director Jonah Hill (mid90s). Reeves plays Reef Hawk, a self-absorbed Oscar-winner and former child star who returns to public life after a five-year absence caused by heroin addiction. Now clean, he's soon facing trouble again thanks to a compromising video. With help from his oldest friends (Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer), and crisis lawyer Ira (played by Hill), his quest to identify the blackmailer forces Reef to reckon with his past. Co-written by Ezra Woods and Hill, who hoards a lot of the juicy lines for his own outrageous character, this brisk and edgy satire neatly riffs on how Hollywood scandals are handled or not - as Hill's legal eagle suggests, the only way you can become famous now is being a victim. An assured Reeves brings some soul to Reef, while starry cameos - Drew Barrymore as herself, Martin Scorsese as Reef's first manager - sprinkle much-needed glamour. But as typified by Diaz and Bomer's paper-thin roles, it all feels a little underwritten.
