Jake Johnson plays to his amiably nonchalant strengths in this likeable indie comedy. His feckless stoner is estranged from his mother (Susan Sarandon), but when she dies, she bequeaths to him a "conditional inheritance". He can have her swanky cabin in the Yosemite forest if he completes the challenges she records for him on videotape. Sly life lessons lurk within her to-do list, which includes "contact the one who got away" and "eat what you kill", and as Johnson (with his adorably doleful dog) accedes to his mother's demands, it becomes clear that he is really searching for something. Writer/director Trent O'Donnell never labours the point, and cameos from JK Simmons and D'Arcy Carden serve to anchor a sometimes contrived story. Bathed in a sun-dappled glow, this is a slender but sweet take on how life, love and loss never go to plan.
