A group of aerophobics try to conquer their fear of flying on a turbulent trip to Iceland in this quirky, low-key comedy. They're nervous enough waiting in Heathrow, especially when the self-help trainer organising their excursion fails to materialise and they're left in the hands of her inexperienced young aide. Once they arrive in Iceland, the bad luck snowballs, starting with an overnight delay in the return journey. The first English-language film from Icelandic writer/directorHafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson(Under the Tree) is an odd little film. It's shot like Scandi noir, but its characters and plot developments border on farce or screwball comedy. There are some fine performances - especially Timothy Spall as an ex-soldier who brings his training into action and Lydia Leonard as a neurotic property developer - and plenty of delightfully daft moments of character-based weirdness, but it never really takes off - it's as if the film itself is afraid of flying.
