With a grand cast and a bold approach, Sarah Polley's tale of female empowerment tackles a traumatic true story. It's adapted from Miriam Toews's 2018 novel, which took its inspiration from a Bolivian Mennonite community where the menfolk were systematically drugging and raping the women. Transplanting the action to America, Polley's film thankfully only hints at this abuse. The story focuses on the aftermath, as the women gather in a hayloft to debate their course of action over a few hours, and decide whether to fight or take flight. Among those doing the talking are Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Rooney Mara, who gives a spirited turn as Ona, left pregnant from one of the many assaults. It's a stellar ensemble, enlivened by a cameo from Frances McDormand, and Ben Whishaw as the colony's teacher, a friend to the group. The slow-burning drama is often shot through with urgent vitality, but prepare yourself for a sombre affair that is as muted as the film's washed-out visual palette.
