A family trip to the country takes a menacing twist in this slow-burning horror mystery. Divorcé Richard (Tom Goodman-Hill) and eager-to-please new wife Holly (Aisling Loftus) arrive at his ex's country pile to celebrate his youngest daughter's birthday, only to encounter barely disguised disdain from the family. Affable, easy-going Richard initiates an evening of drunken revels, but a toxic turn of events disrupts the rural idyll. Writer/director Sebastian Godwin started in short films, so it is no surprise that his 75-minute feature debut feels like an extended if underdeveloped short. The teasing of creepy skulduggery certainly fuels an air of unease. However, the film is too enigmatic for its own good, undercooking the suspense and leaving us desiring a bit more meat on the bone.
