After nearly coming off the rails with Perdita Durango, maverick director Alex de la Iglesia returns to the realms of pitch-black comedy with this macabre tale of a comedy double act whose success disguises a pathological rivalry. Superb performances from the dashingly witty El Gran Wyoming and his put-upon stooge, Santiago Segura, are the key to this scathing memoir of Spanish light entertainment during two decades of almost ceaseless socio-political upheaval. Yet the romantic feuds, drug-induced separations and explosive reunions would be nothing without the knowing kitsch of the decor and the wicked irreverence of the direction.
