A long train ride from Moscow to Murmansk becomes a journey of unexpected connection in Juho Kuosmanen's character-driven drama. Finnish archaeology student Laura (Seidi Haarla) was supposed to be making the trip to see the area's petroglyphs with her lover (Dinara Drukarova), but finds herself travelling solo. Unfortunately for Laura, she turns out to be anything but alone when rough and ready miner Lyokha (Yuriy Borisov) turns up to share a sleeping car. The initial claustrophobia is intense as Lyokha seems to occupy at least two-thirds of the carriage, not just with his outsize jar of pickles and bottle of booze, but also his brash personality. However, as the journey towards the Arctic ice continues, a thaw begins to occur, and Laura starts to suspect that Lyokha's masculine bravado is only skin deep. This tale of subtly shifting attitudes is lent extra nuance by Haarla and Borisov, who deliver beautifully delicate performances. Kuosmanen pushes them unhurriedly into increasingly emotionally resonant terrain in a film that explores the difference that can exist between expectations and reality.
