John Ferguson
One of the defining films in Hong Kong action cinema, this not only made names out of director John Woo and star Chow Yun-Fat, but also exerted a considerable influence over one Quentin Tarantino. Chow takes his now familiar role as the lethal but honorable crook - in this case a counterfeiter - who, with his weary partner in crime (Ti Lung), attempts to go straight but is led back into a battle to the death with a ruthless gangster. Inspired by the respected 1960s Hong Kong crime drama True Colours of a Hero, this also has nods to the ultra-cool French thrillers of Jean-Pierre Melville. However, the artfully choreographed scenes of slow-motion destruction are all Woo's and more than compensate for the occasional lapses into clumsy sentimentality. This is available on video in both dubbed and subtitled versions, although the latter - like many Hong Kong titles - is unintentionally funny because of dubious translation.
