In this is a highly acclaimed Italian horror masterpiece, graveyard caretaker Rupert Everett divides his time between seeing off the zombies that appear about a week after their mortal remains have been interned, and carrying on an affair with a local widow. Dwelling on the more metaphysical elements of the genre, it's beautifully directed by Michele Soavi with wit, style and emotional substance, and Everett gives a bravura central performance in a unique original bursting with both gore and brains. Based on the novel Dellamorte Dellamore (the film's Italian title) by Tiziano Sclavi (the creator of the popular Dylan Dog comic book character), Soavi's sophisticated shocker is a mordant delight.
