The rules of engagement emerge slowly in this Bafta-nominated police procedural thriller set in north India. Newly widowed Santosh (Shahana Goswami) reluctantly inherits her husband's role as constable after he's killed in the line of duty. As she's dragged into the case of a murdered teenage girl, misogyny and casteism ensure she won't be listened to. Veteran inspector Sharma (Sunita Rajwar) takes the 28-year-old dowager under her wing - but her feathers aren't exactly clean either. Though their bond is bright in a dark world dominated by men and money, corruption and inequality make light work of everyone's morals. Film-maker Sandhya Suri's documentary background is clear. The writer/director navigates heavy themes with a light touch, grounding the film in an atmosphere thick with repressed emotions. The pace is studied but there's plenty to see, not just in Santosh's compelling quest for answers but in two performances of remarkable restraint and subtlety, from Goswami as the titular widow and Rajwar as her superior.
