After The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor adapts another true story with his second feature directing effort, a moving if busy drama of fathers, sons and racial inequity. Raised in 1980s and 90s New Jersey, Rob Peace (Jay Will) is a brilliant science student whose father (Ejiofor) is convicted of murder. While studying at Yale, Rob battles to prove his father's innocence and sells weed to pay the legal fees, with fraught consequences. Adapting a non-fiction book by Rob's Yale mate Jeff Hobbs, Ejiofor summons the spirit of mid-budget 1990s American indie cinema for his character-driven take on real-world injustice. The results are satisfyingly earnest, albeit overcrowded with incident and detail. The main casualties are Mary J Blige (as Rob's mother) and Camila Cabello (Rob's partner), sidelined alike as Ejiofor struggles to tease the problems of Rob's life into shape. The script resorts to voiceover and exposition to join the narrative dots, sometimes clumsily, but Will's sensitive, likeable turn provides emotional ballast right up to the haunting climax.
