This powerful Oscar-nominated documentary about a fight for justice begins with the revelation that a 13-year-old girl was raped by three young men in a village in the eastern state of Jharkhand, India. What follows is even more shocking, not least when a local authority figure suggests the girl - given the name "Kiran" in the film to protect her identity - marry one of the rapists. Her father Ranjit is blamed for not protecting his daughter's honour and her virginity, while many in the village shun the family. "In India, very few men stand by their daughters," we're told, and yet Ranjit's eight-year journey proves otherwise, as this world-weary farmer strives to bring the perpetrators to court, amid threats to his family's safety. Director Nisha Pahuja uses an observational style that creates a real sense of intimacy. Filled with startling facts - a woman is raped every twenty minutes in India - it's an enlightening and sometimes enraging look at Indian masculinity.
