Over 20,000 British Army deserters were laying low across the country in the late 1940s. Lawrence Huntington's thoughtful thriller pleads their plight while also revealing the UK's widespread discontent at the slow pace of postwar recovery. Making a living in a seaside pub, absconder Derek Farr is forced to flee when old comrade Kenneth More attempts to blackmail him. However, Farr's problem is exacerbated when his bid to pawn his service revolver coincides with a robbery and he must rely on war widow Joan Hopkins to clear his name. The cut-glass accents might grate, but this is a gritty insight into a nation paying the price for victory. Farr impresses as the decent, but diffident outsider who is motivated as much by shame as fear, while Edward Chapman is typically effective as the chief inspector on the case. The climactic chase through Soho is perfunctory, but it provides a valuable snapshot of the district before it turned seedy.
