James Mottram

Celine Song's nuanced indie romantic drama is a graceful, sensitive movie about unrequited passions and what happens when the stars don't quite align. Like In the Mood for Love before it, it's destined to find a place in the heart for incurable romantics. It starts when two young Korean best friends are separated by a family move to Toronto. Twelve years later, budding playwright Nora (The Morning Show's Greta Lee) gets back in touch with Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) through the internet, and youthful emotions stir. Another decade on, he travels to America, but now she's married to fellow writer Arthur (John Magaro). Avoiding Hollywood histrionics, Song crafts a film that captures the realities of love, subtly exploring the idea that the grass isn't always greener. Using language barriers in one quietly devastating scene to express true feelings, this is a truly sophisticated adult tear-jerker. Beautifully performed and shot, it is destined to be talked about for years.
