Veteran German director Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas) heads to Japan with this serene and unassuming drama. In modern-day Tokyo, Hirayama (celebrated Japanese actor Koji Yakusho) is content with his simple and structured life as a cleaner of public toilets. Taking comfort in the routine, he eats at the same noodle bar every evening and, between shifts, enjoys literature, photography and listening to classic rock cassette tapes, including the Kinks, Van Morrison and the Lou Reed hit of the film's title. Yet as Hirayama goes about his business, slack co-workers, strangers and his own niece throw him off course, and allude to a hidden past. Strengthened by a sympathetic and understated performance from Yakusho, Perfect Days is an ode to solitude and everyday pleasures that rewards viewers' patience with its stripped-back story and gentle pacing.
