Alan Jones

A sci-fi horror about writer's block, this stars Hannah Arterton as Bobbi Johnson, the author of a literary sensation that she wrote while high on drugs. Her editor wants an immediate follow-up, which Bobbi struggles to deliver because she is now clean. The solution? A state-of-the-art computer with enhanced artificial intelligence, provided by sinister inventor Jenny Seagrove. The catch? As the monster machine manipulates Bobbi's work, she suffers hallucinogenic side effects that have her questioning her sanity. Directed by former special effects artist Paul Hyett (The Seasoning House), this is a claustrophobic abstraction that owes a debt to Davids Lynch and Cronenberg. While the script would have benefited from tighter plotting, Arterton's bravura performance holds interest, and she's ably supported by Tom Conti and Rosie Day as, respectively, Bobbi's mentor and stalker.
