Thriller based on true events, starring Adam Bessa. Two years after his release from prison during the Assad regime, Syrian refugee Hamid lives in France where he fixates on locating the man who brutalised him, and joins an online network dedicated to tracking down war criminals. Despite a sensationalist premise revolving around the pursuit of vengeance, this drama from French director Jonathan Millet remains steadfastly low-key. Syrian refugee Hamid (Adam Bessa) pursues his former torturer from Damascus's Sednaya prison to Strasbourg, as part of a covert group of would-be war-crime avengers. But, with only smells and harrowing remembrances to go on, it's not initially clear whether the young man he identifies as his target (Tawfeek Barhom) is definitely the right guy. Based on various true stories, this is a carefully plotted and slow-burning film about the cost of justice and whether it's wiser, or indeed possible, to move on. But the drama can be uneven, and though it's thematically complex and beautifully shot, Millet's harrowing study in trauma never quite finds catharsis. Bessa gives an impressively nuanced performance, though, and a scene of the two could-be nemeses eating Syrian food together at a café while conversing in French is a masterclass in tension - one that lends the film what core it has.
