Having debuted auspiciously with the jittery thriller Bethlehem (2013), Israeli writer/director Yuval Adler consolidates with this sophomore outing based on Yiftach Reicher Atir's insider espionage novel, The English Teacher. Diane Kruger is typically effective as Rachel Currin, a Mossad agent who goes undercover in Tehran in order to infiltrate the electronics company run by Farhad Razavi (Cas Anvar) and facilitate the passing of some defective components into the Iranian nuclear programme. It's a tricky assignment and the scenes of Kruger blending into her new surroundings are intriguing, as Adler examines the psychological strain of living in an unfamiliar culture under an assumed identity. Less compelling, however, are the flashbacks revealing her relationship with a Berlin-based British handler (Martin Freeman) after she resurfaces following a prolonged silence. The storytelling also becomes a little muddled in the closing stretch, although the weapons-smuggling trip to the Turkish border is the pick of several tense set-pieces.
