Steve Morrissey

Judy Greer stars here as a widow whose husband was killed by a drunk driver and uses her neighbour's home-built time travel machine to try and put things right. After a couple of westerns, this third movie by writer/director Jared Moshé is quite a change of direction and he uses his talented cast, including Judy Greer and Payman Maadi, to smooth over the hard edges between competing genres - sci-fi and the kitchen-sink weepie. His story, meanwhile, deals not just with the ethics of sitting in judgement on someone before they've done anything wrong but also that old staple, the time-travel paradox ("aporia", from the Greek, refers to an irresolvable internal contradiction). The film pulls a couple of clever plot gotchas at key moments and its time-travel logic won't convince hardened sci-fi geeks. But then it is a sci-fi movie for people who don't usually like the genre and prefer their dramas to be full of well-drawn, relatable human beings. And on those terms, it really works.
