Summary

Sci-fi fantasy starring Emma Stone. In his Edinburgh lab, eminent Victorian scientist Dr Godwin Baxter conducts his greatest experiment yet: Bella, an adult woman whose brain has been replaced with that of a foetus. As her mind rapidly develops, Bella grows restless and decides to leave her home for an adventure in Europe, where she will learn much about the world, herself and the foibles of humanity.

This delirious and dreamy Victorian-era fable reboots Frankenstein with a bawdy, feminist twist. Offering up a remarkable performance of physical and verbal dexterity, Emma Stone plays Bella, who takes her own life but is reanimated with a child's brain by an eccentric scientist (Willem Dafoe). As she relearns to walk and talk, Bella discovers both a distaste for polite society and a love for sexual pleasure, as an earnest student (Ramy Youssef) and a lusty lawyer (Mark Ruffalo) take more than a passing interest in her. Everything about this artful sci-fi romance feels delightfully strange. Adapted from Alasdair Gray's 1992 novel, the film reteams the core creatives from 2018's The Favourite - director Yorgos Lanthimos, writer Tony McNamara and cinematographer Robbie Ryan - and the result is beautifully odd, from McNamara's off-kilter dialogue to Ryan's use of a fish-eye lens. At 141 minutes, it merits trimming, especially the segment where Bella journeys to Europe. But the final London-set section leaves you feeling both satisfied and horrified, as revenge proves sweet.
