Hungarian director György Pálfi (Taxidermia) relocates to Greece for this inventive, but surprisingly dark, satirical fable told from the perspective of a chicken. A black-feathered chick hatches in the seemingly inescapable environment of a battery farm. But when a stroke of luck offers her a chance to flee, she finds liberation has its own perils. Free, but still near the bottom of nature's pecking order, she's chased, shooed, crosses a road (of course) and, after hitching a lift with a trucker, finds herself cooped up once more - this time at the home of an ageing restaurateur. What starts out like an art house take on The Incredible Journey, featuring mild peril and clever slapstick humour, turns very bleak in the second half, due to the restaurateur's reluctant involvement with organised crime. The change in tone is jarring, and viewers' enjoyment of the film might hinge on how much they can stomach the sudden swerve into tragedy. Still, this is a beautifully shot and highly original way to cast a beady eye on man's inhumanity to man - and beast.
