Summary

Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike) is founder and CEO of Grayson Guardianships, who repeatedly petitions judges to grant her custody of frail, vulnerable people to prevent them from becoming a burden in their twilight years. In truth, Marla is a sharp-suited con artist, who makes her money by selling off her victims' homes once they are heavily sedated at expensive living facilities and unable to defend themselves. Marla unknowingly goes from hunter to prey when she turns up at the front door of Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest) brandishing a court order.

Rosamund Pike is exhilaratingly wicked as an unscrupulous legal guardian in this swaggering black comedy from English writer/director J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed). Preying on lonely, mentally incapacitated elderly Americans, Marla Grayson (Pike) is always on the hunt for wealthy wards, whose assets she can sink her teeth into. Marla's lover, Fran (Eiza González), is also her partner in crime, but when the pair find a promising new mark (Dianne Wiest), they're not counting on her connection to an extremely dangerous man (Peter Dinklage). Describing herself as a lioness, Marla is more like a shark: the smoothest of operators, who acts with such speed and decisiveness that no one sees her coming. The film revels in Marla's skilfully executed skulduggery, and Pike performs the role with relish, and is faintly heroic when she squares up to threatening men. If its twisted take on the American Dream can be a touch crude, I Care a Lot is a lot of fun and delivers confidently on thrills, with the propulsive, ticking-timebomb score adding urgency.
