Summary

Astrophysicist Ben Matthias joins Father Kent, legitimate psychic Harriet and university professor Bruce Davis at Gracey Manor, the new home of medic Gabbie and her nine-year-old son Travis. The second film to be based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name -following the 2003 Eddie Murphy vehicle The Haunted Mansion -is a fairly lifeless exercise. Directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People) from a script by Katie Dippold (2016's Ghostbusters), it follows a single mother (Rosario Dawson) who recruits a number of self-professed paranormal experts after discovering her new house is plagued by ghosts. The cast is stuffed with likeable stars, from LaKeith Stanfield and Owen Wilson to Danny DeVito and Tiffany Haddish,but they are hampered by a script that can't find the right balance between funny, spooky and earnest. The film is also sorely lacking in atmosphere which, coupled with some major pacing issues, means it turns into something of a slog. There are some mildly amusing scenes, such as one involving a sketch artist, and viewers might find pleasure in the handful of big-name cameos. But this is a misfire that never carves out its own distinct identity.
