This love story from writer/director Clio Barnard offers a beautiful ode to human connection. Goofy but charming landlord Ali (Adeel Akhtar) lives in Bradford where, in his spare time, he makes music in his basement. But Ali's chirpy demeanour hides the fact that he's struggling with the fall out from his impending divorce. While dropping off a tenant's child at school, Ali meets widowed teaching assistant Ava (Claire Rushbrook), and the pair grow close - but they soon face adversity from Ali's family and Ava's overprotective son (Shaun Thomas), while also battling their own insecurities. As the romance unfolds, Barnard weaves in astute observations about struggling working-class Britain. Favouring character over plot, his film delivers social realism with a vital dash of optimism, and finds tender joy in the small moments.
