Well-versed in playing charismatic villains, Javier Bardem (Skyfall, No Country for Old Men) is the personification of corporate corruption in this slight Spanish satire. As the owner of a business that produces industrial scales, Bardem presents himself to staff as a fatherly figure, though a sacked employee (Óscar de la Fuente) protests otherwise. As Bardem pursues a "business excellence" award, his fling with a savvy intern (Almudena Amor) threatens to further unbalance his patrician workplace rule. Writer/director Fernando León de Aranoa overworks the scales metaphors and also fumbles the pacing in the film's midsection, where the film loses its comic punch. However, this is undoubtedly Bardem's show, and he nails his character's blithe amorality with queasily magnetic precision.
