Creepy doll movies are nothing new in the horror pantheon, but this latest from director/co-writer Rod Blackhurst, best known for 2016's Amanda Knox documentary, is less Chucky and more "up-chucky". A 70s throwback that apes The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the film sees hapless hikers Macy (Fabianne Therese) and Chase (Seann William Scott) ambushed by the titular hulking entity (played by professional wrestler Max the Impaler), who wears a cracked doll mask and frilly dress. Once Chase is horrifically debilitated, Macy becomes Dolly's captive, and is forcibly dressed up like a child, confined to a cot and fed baby food (and worse). This is gross-out exploitation trash at its worst, and it aspires to little more. Occasionally funny in its outrageousness, it might appeal to a Friday night horror crowd, but despite its homages, grainy 16mm stock and old-school sensibilities, Dolly is tiresome, grim, and overlong at 82 minutes.
