Summary

Romantic comedy starring Lily James and Shazad Latif. White film-maker and habitual singleton Zoe begins shooting a documentary about her childhood friend Kaz, a British-Pakistani man who has tentatively agreed to an "assisted" marriage. As the preparations develop and Zoe follows Kaz and his family to Lahore, the groom-to-be starts to doubt his decision.

Lily James and Shazad Latif star in this watchable if unmemorable romcom from director Shekhar Kapur and screenwriter Jemima Khan. Unlucky-in-love documentary film-maker Zoe (James) is astonished to learn that childhood best friend Kaz (Latif) has agreed to an "assisted" marriage. Believing this to be an outdated mode of matchmaking, Zoe asks Kaz's permission to film him on his journey, and when he agrees, she discovers it's a more complex issue than she had assumed. Much of the culture-clash comedy is a little too broad,especially that provided by Emma Thompson as Zoe's clueless mother, and a recurring motif in which Zoe recounts her doomed romantic escapades in the form of fairy-tales is a little forced. Still, the two leads share an easy chemistry, and there are some interesting insights into Pakistani culture, even if the film feels like a beginner's guide to the subject of assisted marriages, rather than entertainment in its own right.
