Andy Griffith (Matlock) makes his big-screen debut here, giving the performance of his career as "Lonesome" Rhodes, the small-town philosopher who is discovered by a TV producer (Patricia Neal) and rocketed to fame and fortune. Director Elia Kazan and writer Budd Schulberg had previously collaborated for On the Waterfront, both winning Oscars. Although less celebrated, this film about the corrupting power of the media remains topical today. Watch out for a young Lee Remick, also in her first film.
