A star rating of 3 out of 5.
James Mottram
Eminem super-fans take the lead in a documentary that traces their obsession with the controversial rapper from Detroit. The title nods to the artist's 2000 single Stan, about a crazed aficionado driven to murder-suicide after he's seemingly ignored by the star's alter ego Slim Shady, but the word itself has since sunk into popular culture to mean something far less dark. Here, those who worship the musician come across as (relatively) normal. One woman has his image tattooed 22 times on her body, which is about the extent of the extremes. The film has a sweet, likeable tone, but as a Shady Films production and with Eminem himself interviewed, it's palpably sanitised - for the fans, but certainly not by the fans. Compared to, say, Our Hobby Is Depeche Mode, which examined fans' appreciation of the English electro pioneers, this offers little political or social context. Nor does it dive deeply into the psychology of its participants, who might all borrow from Eminem himself: that's just The Way I Am.
