A testament to the magic of film and its powerful connection with audiences, this lovingly crafted documentary charts the restoration of one of the most recognisable locations from spaghetti westerns. Sad Hill is the fictional cemetery that provides the backdrop to the final showdown in Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. When filming in Burgos, northern Spain, wrapped in 1966, the set was left to slowly deteriorate and eventually disappear. But in 2015, a group of like-minded fans came together to return it to its former ragged glory. Guillermo de Oliveira's film draws on interviews with the volunteers as well as those who worked on Leone's film, including composer Ennio Morricone and - in a real coup for such a small film - star Clint Eastwood. The contributions from Metallica singer James Hetfield are a little superfluous (one of the project leaders is a really big fan), but cultural historian Christopher Frayling adds his customary authority and insight. The use of drone cameras perfectly captures the progress of the work and even eclipses Leone, who was prevented from shooting his own aerial sweeps owing to bad weather. The grand unveil, timed to mark the 50th anniversary of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, brims with a life-affirming community spirit - a fitting pay-off for a film that itself was only made possible through the generosity of crowd-funding.
