Calum Baker

Mel Gibson hardly does his best to lift this unimaginative crime drama about a grizzled backwoods survivalist type whose peaceful existence is interrupted by the sudden threat of gangland hoodlums. He brings a certain quiet humanity as his character Bowdrie shelters the injured January (Shelley Hennig), who has floated downriver after surviving the brutal attack that killed her roommate. At the same time, Bowdrie must make sure to protect his own daughter (Sofia Hublitz) from the vengeful thugs looking to finish their hit job. The plot's nice and lean, in a story that nods to classic western genre tropes through the lens of modern small-town America, while the actors are in solid enough form to carry some attention through a raft of dreary clichés. But Gibson's lingering charisma isn't enough to inject any psychology into a painfully underdeveloped character; by the end, you still won't know a jot about Bowdrie or his life beyond his sheer macho competence. The film's eye-rolling conservative fantasy of one gruff but good-hearted man battling off generic drug-dealing toughs is told with sincerity, at least, while fans of creative screen violence should stick around for one droll interrogation scene involving a swinging lawnmower.
