Summary

Disaster thriller based on a true story, starring Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell and Joel Edgerton. In June 2018, 12 junior football players and their adult coach become trapped inside Thailand's Tham Luang cave due to rapidly rising waters. Rescue attempts are made by officials but, as time runs out, an unlikely source of hope emerges: a ragtag group of amateur cave-diving enthusiasts.

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The perilous mission to free 12 junior footballers and their coach trapped in a flooded cave system in Thailand in 2018 provided the basis for the Bafta-nominated documentary The Rescue, and here director Ron Howard mounts a gripping dramatisation of the same story. Admirably avoiding becoming a mawkish Hollywood version of the narrative, the film is largely faithful to the real events - even if some of them seem too far-fetched to be believed. Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen are superb as the unassuming British cave divers whose heroic exploits helped prevent disaster, while Joel Edgerton shines as an Australian fellow diver whose day job as an anaesthetist proved equally vital. The underwater scenes are especially terrific, creating a palpable sense of claustrophobia, which is boosted by the first-rate sound design. The film is perhaps a little on the long side, but the rescue itself is staged with real tension, and the stirring finale is expertly judged.
