Matt Glasby

"The only cute hippo is a dead hippo!" warns grizzled hunter Walker (Joaquim de Almeida) at the start of this preposterous creature feature from British writer/director James Nunn (Tower Block). On holiday in Louisiana, best friends Sistine (Madison Davenport) and Hannah (Olivia Bernstone) take a boat trip to see the local gators. Their troubles begin when guide Rodrigo (Michel Curiel) steers them and their fellow travellers off-route - and into the path of a very large, very hungry hippo. Shot with a tourist-board sheen, indifferently scored, and featuring bland, soon-to-be-eaten stock characters, Hungry fails to build any tension at all. Most of the runtime is spent watching people doing inexplicably stupid things, like wasting a distress flare on something rather than escaping. A brief sequence in the upturned boat conjures a bit of claustrophobia, but otherwise this is thrill-free stuff. Worst of all, the computer-generated hippo never feels like a credible threat, not least because it actually looks quite cute...
