Female desire is unleashed with scandalous consequences in this invigorating spin on DH Lawrence's 1928 novel. The Crown's Emma Corrin plays Lady Constance Chatterley, who becomes a nursemaid to her war-wounded husband (Matthew Duckett), before falling for their estate's gruffly attractive gamekeeper (Jack O'Connell). The depiction of this odd couple's attraction is where the film excels, and French actress-turned-director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Mustang) doesn't hold back with the sex scenes. O'Connell brings earthiness and subtlety, while the elegant Corrin undergoes a mesmerising emotional journey, casting off both inhibitions and clothing. Joely Richardson, who played Chatterley in Ken Russell's 1993 BBC version, also adds value in the role of nurse Mrs Bolton. Female pleasure is no longer a radical concept, but it turns out that, if told well and with chemistry this sizzling, then Lady Chatterley's Lover still has its place.
