Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

David Parkinson

Nominated for the best foreign language film Oscar, the only feature completed by Roman Polanski in his native Poland is a lean, calculated study of male posturing and the hostilities that reinforce the generation gap. Shot in a steely black and white that intensifies both the film's chilling atmosphere and the crackling sexual charge that courses between the protagonists, the action is given an unbearable tension by its claustrophobic setting on board a yacht during a weekend cruise on a lake. The cast is superb, with the non-professional Zygmunt Malanowicz judging his swaggering, youthful brio to perfection.
