French-based Georgian film-maker Gela Babluani helms this US remake of his own cult hit 13 Tzameti, but something is sadly lost in translation. The premise remains mind-blowing: desperate for money, electrician Sam Riley steals an envelope that contains a mysterious invitation that could earn him truckloads of cash, only to find himself entered in an underground Russian Roulette competition, on which people can bet. While Babluani successfully ratchets up the tension during the chilling roulette sequences, the dull subplots cause the story to flag badly outside of the competition. On the plus side, the film boasts an intriguing ensemble cast: Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Ray Winstone, Ben Gazzara and Alexander Skarsgård are among the familiar faces, and Michael Shannon steals the shows as the event's diabolical MC.
