Trace Lysette(Transparent) gives a compelling performance as the titular character in this slow-burning and occasionally poignant drama. Free-spirited Monica is pulled back to her middle-class suburban home when her estranged mother (Patricia Clarkson) becomes terminally ill. Facing her family for the first time in years, Monica patiently and heartbreakingly awaits their acceptance. Director Andrea Pallaoro (Hannah) allows his characters the time and space to grieve not only the impending loss of life, but also the loss of time as a family and the memories never made. However, the slow pace means that events can feel frustratingly surface level, with a heavy reliance on meaningful looks and "things left unsaid". At one point Monica whispers to her semi-conscious mother all the things she wants to tell her - yet we never get to hear them. It's a shame that a multifaceted character like Monica isn't given more of a voice, and while the film proves sporadically engaging, it could have had greater impact.
